~Welcome to Pre-Kindergarten~
The Pre-Kindergarten experience consists of a full-day program. There are two sections of Pre-Kindergarten.  Each Pre-Kindergarten classroom is staffed with two certified teachers.  Our small class sizes ensure individual attention to each child. Our goal is for every student to receive an excellent educational beginning that will place them on the path to success in Kindergarten. The students are provided a child centered environment where they are exposed to classroom structure, routine, and diverse learning materials. The classroom environment provides many rich  structured and non-structured learning experiences for children to choose from. The program provides learning experiences aimed at developing language and communication skills, creative and critical thinking skills, large and fine motor skills, and social/emotional growth.

Literacy:
Our classrooms foster a love of reading and writing through the balanced literacy framework which provides students many opportunities for real life reading and writing experiences.  Through the use of children’s literature we focus on enhancing pre-reading skills and strategies, oral language development, and written expression.  Within this framework, students participate in the following components:

Reading Workshop-Students are exposed to a wide variety of literature including fiction, non-fiction, poems, songs, nursery rhymes and traditional tales. The reading workshop includes interactive read-aloud, shared and performance reading, and writing about what we have read.

Writing Workshop-Students begin to explore writing through illustrations. Students write for varying purposes and audiences across genres. The writing workshop includes shared writing, interactive writing, and independent writing.

Phonics, Spelling and  Word Study-Students learn about the relationships of letters to sounds as well as the structure of words to help them in reading, spelling, and writing.

Social Studies:
The social studies program at the pre-kindergarten level focuses on helping students develop awareness of themselves as growing individuals in society.  They learn about values, ideas, customs, and traditions through folktales, legends, music, and poems.  In addition, their relationships with others in the classroom and school become sources for social learning. Interdisciplinary activities help students learn about their roles as citizens and demonstrate their understanding of rights and responsibilities in the classroom.

Mathematics:
Pre-Kindergarten students use everyday math experiences to facilitate mathematical concepts and vocabulary. The use of  manipulatives helps students to internalize concepts such as numbers, colors,  patterns, shapes, classifying and sorting.

Science:
Students receive an introduction to the physical setting and the living environment through the use of literature and songs.  Students begin to explore the scientific method and the world around them through hands on activities and experiments.

Special Subject Offerings:
Art, Music, Gym, Library.

Assessments:
Students are assessed throughout the year by a variety of methods. Children’s progress is shared with parents through conferences and quarterly report cards.

Extracurricular Activities:
Pre-kindergarten students attend field trips that support our grade level curriculum.
