~Welcome to Kindergarten~
The kindergarten experience consists of a full-day program, spanning from 8:05 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. Monday through Friday.  There are two sections of kindergarten classes, staffed with at least two certified teachers. The students are provided literature-rich experiences which allow them to naturally develop as literate learners in a safe, child-centered environment.  The program aims at promoting literacy, communicative fluency and self-confidence as it fully prepares students for the first grade program. 

Literacy: 
Our classrooms foster a love of reading and writing through the balanced literacy framework which provides students many opportunities for real life reading and writing experiences.  A minimum of 120 minutes daily is devoted to literacy instruction.  Literacy experiences through the use of children’s literature focus on reading skills and strategies, oral language development, and written expression.  Within this framework, students participate in the following components: Reading Workshop (includes independent reading, guided reading, and literacy centers)

Writing Workshop (includes independent writing, guided writing, and interactive writing) Language/ Fundations (includes the study of phonemic awareness, language conventions, spelling and vocabulary through interactive read aloud, modeled shared reading and writing experiences, interactive writing, handwriting, and language word study)


Social Studies:
The social studies program at the kindergarten level focuses on helping students develop awareness of themselves as growing individuals in society.  They learn about values, ideas, customs, and traditions through folktales, legends, and music.  In addition, their relationships with others in the classroom and school become sources for social learning.  Interdisciplinary activities help students learn about their roles as citizens in a community, state and nation with accompanying rights and responsibilities in the classroom.


Mathematics: 
In kindergarten students use everyday math experiences to facilitate mathematical concepts.  The use of manipulatives helps students internalize concepts of numbers, symbols, operations, and basic facts.


Science: 
Students receive an introduction to the physical setting and the living environment through the use of literature, as well as hands-on scientific experiences.

Extracurricular Activities:
Kindergarten students attend field trips that support our grade level curriculum. Students also have the opportunity to partake in numerous after school clubs and activities.
